Screenshot the National Weather Service storm report for your ZIP code showing hail size, wind speed, and exact time of the storm. This is the foundation of your claim. No NWS storm data = no claim approval, no matter what your roof looks like.
How to get it: Visit weather.gov, search your location, click "Past Weather" → "Storm Reports." Save the report showing hail/wind on the date damage occurred.
Photos Within 48 Hours of Storm
Photos taken immediately after the storm prove the damage is new, not pre-existing. This is especially critical if the adjuster doesn't inspect for 2-3 weeks. They can't claim the damage was there before the storm if your photos prove it wasn't.
What to photograph:
- Granules in gutters and downspouts (flush a hose. If water runs gray/black, granules are washing off)
- Any visible damage from ground level (missing shingles, dented vents, debris)
- Hailstones if you can find them before they melt (put a ruler next to them for size reference)

"Damage pattern inconsistent with reported storm"
When used: Homeowner claims wind damage but all slopes are equally affected (wind damage should be directional). Or claims hail but no collateral damage to vents/flashing (hail would dent everything).
Adjuster's argument: "If this was wind from the west, why is the east slope damaged? This is aging."
How to counter: Acknowledge what's aging vs. what's storm damage. Don't claim the entire roof is storm damage if only parts are. Focus claim on the areas with clear recent damage.
Prevention: Have a professional document exactly which areas are storm damage vs. aging. Honest, accurate claims get approved; exaggerated claims get denied.
"Insufficient damage to warrant replacement"
When used: Some storm damage exists, but not widespread enough for full replacement.
Adjuster's argument: "You have 6 hail strikes per square. Code requires 8-10. We'll pay for spot repair, not replacement."
How to counter: Re-count with the adjuster present. We've had adjusters undercoun by using 8×8 squares instead of 10×10, or by only testing sunny slopes and skipping shaded areas where damage is harder to see. Insist on proper test methodology.

Adjuster Tactics That Deny Legitimate Claims

Tactic 1: Delayed Inspection

Counter: Separate the two. Acknowledge aging ("yes, the roof is 18 years old and shows some wear") but focus on recent storm damage ("but these hail dents and torn tabs are new, from the June 12 storm").
Tactic 3: Using Strict Thresholds
What they do: Require 10 hits per square when your policy or state law only requires 8. Or measure squares smaller than 10×10 to artificially lower the count.
Counter: Know your policy's actual requirements. Bring a tape measure. Verify test square size. If adjuster is using non-standard methodology, object in writing.
Tactic 4: "Cosmetic Damage" Classification
What they do: Admit hail hit your roof, but claim it's "cosmetic" (bruised shingles that still function), not functional damage requiring replacement.
