$9,000 to $20,000
Typical range for architectural shingles on a single-family home in the Indianapolis metro. Ranches land at the low end; large or complex homes in Carmel, Zionsville, and Geist run $18,000–$35,000+.
Single story with walkable pitch, the most economical shingle roof in the metro.
The most common install. Pitch and roofline complexity drive where you land in the range.
Multi-hip rooflines, steep pitches, and premium profiles, common in Carmel, Zionsville, and Geist.
Hail-resistant shingles; many Indiana insurers discount premiums for them, which can repay the upgrade.
Thicker, sculpted shingles that read like slate or shake from the street.
What Moves the Price
Every quote is the same math. These are the inputs. A bid that can’t tell you where it lands on each one isn’t a bid, it’s a guess.
- Roof size and pitch. Materials scale with square footage; steep pitches (8/12 and up) add labor, staging, and safety time.
- Shingle tier. Standard architectural, Class 4 impact-rated, or designer profiles: each step changes price, lifespan, and sometimes your insurance premium.
- Complexity. Hips, valleys, dormers, and skylights mean more flashing, more cut waste, and more detail work than a simple gable.
- Decking condition. Rotten or delaminated sheets are replaced at a per-sheet price agreed in the contract. It’s the only variable in a Checkered Flag quote.
- The system around the shingle. Ice and water shield, synthetic underlayment, new flashing, and balanced ventilation: the items that decide whether the warranty actually applies.
- Tear-off layers. Two existing layers cost more to remove and dispose of than one. We never roof over.
The shingle is only a third of the price (and the bid)
Shingle quotes on the same Indianapolis house routinely land thousands of dollars apart, and the shingle brand is almost never why. The spread lives in the system: ice and water shield at eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment instead of felt, new flashing instead of reused, calculated intake-and-exhaust ventilation, and a written per-sheet decking price instead of an allowance that becomes a change order on day one.
A low bid that excludes those items isn’t cheaper, it’s incomplete, and it can quietly void the manufacturer warranty before the crew leaves. Every Checkered Flag quote itemizes the full system so you can compare line by line, and the number we quote is the number you pay.
Is the Class 4 upgrade worth 10–20%?
In a hail market like central Indiana, often yes. But do the math for your house. Class 4 impact-rated shingles resist the cracking that totals ordinary roofs, and many Indiana insurers discount premiums for them; over a 20-year roof life, that discount can repay much of the upgrade. The trade-off worth knowing: some policies pair the discount with cosmetic-damage exclusions, so read the endorsement before you sign. We’ll quote your roof both ways so the decision is a number, not a pitch.
How insurance changes the math
If your shingles have hail or wind damage from a covered storm event, your homeowner’s insurance may cover replacement minus your deductible. We document every inspection with photos you can hand straight to your adjuster.
One thing Indiana law is clear about: a contractor who offers to “waive” or rebate your deductible is breaking the law (IC 24-5-11), and that offer tells you everything about how they run the rest of the job. We help you document and navigate the claim, but the deductible is yours.
