What the NWS Data Shows
A derecho (widespread wind storm) tracked across Indiana from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with sustained winds of 60-70 mph and peak gusts to 85 mph recorded across the metro.
Unlike typical thunderstorms that affect narrow corridors, this derecho impacted the entire nine-county metro area simultaneously, overwhelming emergency services and utilities.
Power outages affected over 250,000 customers, with some areas without electricity for up to one week during late-summer heat.

What to Check, and What to Watch Out For
Derecho wind damage affects entire neighborhoods uniformly. If your street lost trees, your roof likely has damage even if you don't see it from the ground.
Wind damage patterns: missing ridge caps, torn west-facing shingles, damaged vents and chimneys. These often aren't visible without walking the roof.
